Mandates

Three ways we take responsibility for your capital

Every relationship begins with the same question: what is this money for? The answer decides the mandate.

01

Discretionary Portfolio Management

We build and manage the portfolio day to day inside your own brokerage account, within an investment policy statement you approve in writing.

  • Global equity & fixed income
  • Risk budget set in advance
  • Quarterly stewardship review
02

Family Wealth Advisory

Planning that sits above the portfolio: liquidity, currency exposure, cross-border considerations, education funding and succession of the family balance sheet.

  • Multi-generational planning
  • Cash-flow and liquidity mapping
  • Coordination with your CPA and counsel
03

Second Opinion & Portfolio Review

A defined-scope engagement for investors who already have a portfolio and want an independent read on risk, cost and concentration before making a decision.

  • Line-by-line cost audit
  • Concentration & drawdown analysis
  • Written recommendation, no obligation

The process

Four steps, repeated for as long as we work together

01

Discovery

We map the balance sheet, the obligations behind it, and the tolerance for loss as it has shown up in your own history.

02

Investment Policy Statement

Objectives, constraints, allowed instruments and the risk budget are written down and signed before a single dollar is invested.

03

Construction

Positions are implemented in your own account and sized against the risk budget you approved.

04

Stewardship

Continuous monitoring, disciplined rebalancing, and a quarterly review in which we account for every decision taken.

What we invest in

Access to the public markets of the United States.

Portfolios are built primarily from equities and ETFs traded on U.S. public markets. The composition depends on each client's mandate, horizon and risk profile.

U.S. equities

Shares of companies listed on U.S. public markets, selected against the strategy and the role each position plays in the portfolio.

ETFs

Diversified instruments used to take efficient exposure to a market, a sector or a theme with a single position.

Risk management

Construction starts from how much risk the client can carry, and every position is sized before it is chosen.

Long-term discipline

Decisions answer to the financial plan, and the rebalancing rule is written before it is needed.

Custody

Your assets stay with an independent custodian.

Ruben Cano Consulting acts as investment adviser and manages the strategy. Accounts are held at established custodial platforms — Charles Schwab and Interactive Brokers — under the agreements that apply to each relationship.

01 · You

Your assets

The client keeps title to the assets inside an account opened in their own name.

02 · RCC

Advice & management

We write the strategy, advise, and manage the portfolio under the mandate you approved. Our authority is limited to managing it and to having our fee debited.

03 · Custodian

Schwab / Interactive Brokers

The assets sit at the custodial platform, which reports to you directly and independently of us.

Philosophy

Wealth is built by surviving every quarter, staying invested, and letting the arithmetic of compounding do its work.

Ruben Cano, Portfolio Manager

We are process investors. Capital is allocated against a written risk budget, positions are sized before they are chosen, and every exit is defined at entry.

Our only revenue is the fee you pay us. Your money stays in an account in your name at an independent qualified custodian, and our authority extends to managing it.

Principles

A written process, repeated.

Objectives lead

Every investment decision answers to a financial goal that was written down in advance.

A long horizon

Building wealth takes time, and the portfolio is built to survive the whole of it.

Risk sets the size

What a client can afford to lose decides how large each position is allowed to be.

A written process

The rules are set while markets are calm, so a bad week stays a bad week.

Who we serve

Built for people with something to lose

Families

Households consolidating assets across generations, often across two countries and two currencies.

Business owners

Entrepreneurs whose wealth is concentrated in one operating company and who need the liquid balance sheet to behave differently.

Professionals & expatriates

Executives, physicians and independent professionals with US-linked income and a portfolio that has grown without a plan.

The internship

We train the next generation of advisers the way we wish we had been trained

A structured program for aspiring investment advisers and portfolio managers: securities regulation, portfolio construction, client work and Series 65 preparation, taught from inside a working advisory practice.

Questions

Before you call

Who holds my money?

An independent qualified custodian, in an account opened in your name. Our authority is limited to trading in that account and to having our fee debited.

How are you paid?

A single, disclosed advisory fee: an annual rate applied to the assets under management, on the tiered schedule published on the Wealth Management page. It is our only source of revenue.

Is there a minimum?

The fee schedule starts at $100 in assets under management, so the door is open well below the usual private-client thresholds. Advisory and review engagements are quoted as a flat fee.

Can you work with clients outside the United States?

In many cases, yes — subject to the rules of your jurisdiction and the custodian's account eligibility. We will tell you honestly at the first call whether we can serve you.

The first conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Thirty minutes to understand your situation, what the money is for, and whether we are the right firm for you.
